Katrina
My last post may have been a bit rant-ish, but I have reason to be angry. This is what was was on the front page of the paper today:

At least seven bodies were scattered outside the convention center, and hungry, desperate people who were tired of waiting broke through the steel doors to a food service entrance and began pushing out pallets of water and juice and whatever else they could find.

An old man in a chaise lounge lay dead in a grassy median as hungry babies wailed around him. Around the corner, an elderly woman lay dead in her wheelchair, covered up by a blanket. Another body lay beside her wrapped in a sheet

I don't even have the words to respond but I did earlier..here is my 2 cents:
here is what is frustrating even before Katrina hit the news reported that bush said he will be there to help clean up after... why couldn't he be there before ?
most of the people left behind where there because they are very poor non voting Americans.. and the poor in this country (the world) tend to be treated by our government as expendable. had the president known that his daughters or big buss. tax payers where there he would of turn on his or his cohorts thinking caps and work more on preventive safety measures for the residence in the about to be affected area.
The best thing I heard was said yesterday by New Orleans city planner (this is not a direct quote) who said the way she can look at this as an optimist, is that many of these people where living in sub standard housing and the city could never really help them out and build up the land up under the homes (like in the French Quarter) and bring these homes up to code. Now they will have to do this for the residence of this city.
My concern is will the people really be able to come back to their newly built homes and have jobs...I don't know.

went out on my lunch hour and purchased (with some monitary help also from a few people from my work) items to be sent to a temple in baton rouge, la that is providing a shelter for some hurricane refugees. they had sent a help requested e-mail to my temple this morning letting us know what they need. felt good to be able to at least do something.

I don't think that they are expendable as much as "swept under the rug". Low income housing and welfare in a city below sea level was an accident waiting to happen. Now the country has to find a place for these people and do better than building more "projects" somewhere else. 9/11 families got millions. These people deserve no less. As far as for the city of New Orleans, let nature take back the worst part it and triple protect what is left with multiple levies. I'm sure many people will not want to return anyway, to many ghosts!!!

The president doesn't have a thinking cap. The residents of FL sure got aid faster than those of LA. I guess that would be labled a "conspiracy theory" or "playing politics" by some people wearing dunce caps. - X-Filesophile
